I just wrote the following letter to Fred Smith, CEO of FedEx.
Mr. Fred Smith, President & CEO
FedEx Corp.
942 South Shady Grove Road
Memphis, TN 38120
Dear Mr. Smith,
AccuLab has been a FedEx customer for many years, even though a small one. Today, upon walking into the Jackson, TN, service center on Pipkin Road to ship a package, I saw a sign to the right of the door effectively barring anyone carring a handgun (the sign did not picture a rifle or shotgun or bow) or a knife and I was highly offended.
This past December I took a course and successfully obtained a “carry permit” to go armed, primarily with a pistol. In September of this year, I will complete a two day course designed to further my knowledge and practice in carrying a firearm for protection. Your sign offends me greatly because I am not a criminal and I consider myself a model citizen. It is offensive to me and other permit holders that FedEx views me as a common criminal. Only a fool would believe that such a sign would stop someone from entering a FedEx facility with the intention of robbing it.
I understand that FedEx has every right to ban law abiding citizens from their facilities and it is my hope that all such citizens will stop using your facilities. Because I consider your company’s action a personal affront ot my character and integrity, as well as that of a couple of hundred thousand other Tennesseans, I am closing my FedEx account as soon as I pay the invoice for today’s shipment. I will begin shipping packages at my local UPS store, a place where the owner could care less if a law abiding citizen enters carrying a firearm.
Sincerely,
Mike Butler, REM #7923
President
