Where do we go from here?

First, if this isn't the appropriate forum for this topic, please feel free to move it accordingly.

As gun owners and HCP holders, we've had a reasonably good year. Restaurant and park carry have passed (maybe not perfectly). The definition of a loaded long gun has been changed to the benefit of the average hunter. The question is what is next on the agenda to help restore the lawful carry of firearms back to a right from the current inconvenient privilege?

I do have some areas that are of concern to me. Feel free to add your own concerns (or even tell me that mine are idiotic  ).

In no particular order of import:

State law that forbids any state, county, municipal entity from restricting the right of citizens from lawfully carrying a firearm (except for jails, prisons, courtrooms where court is in session, or other places prohibited by federal law) on property owned or operated by the entity.

State law that prohibits companies from firing employees who have firearms in their vehicles on the companies property.

State law that prohibits companies, who received tax incentives, subsidies, or direct funding from any state, county, or local government, from prohibiting employees/customers/visitors from lawfully carrying firearms on property owned or operated by the company (except as prohibited by federal law).

State law that requires court houses, jails, and prisons to provide secure lock boxes (at no charge) to legal firearm carriers and to post prominently that such are available for use.

Remove the need for a permit to open carry a firearm.

Lower the age to possess a firearm to 18.

Lower the age to obtain a HCP to 18.

Allow active duty military personnel in Tennessee to carry a firearm (at any age) without a permit (their military ID is the permit).

That is about all I can think of at this time. All of the above is law in at least one (quite possibly more) state, currently.

As a current member of the military I am also opposed to make a special class even though it would benifit me. I think each person has the right to protect them selves by whatever means they deem appropriate at the time.

In the spirit of the Tennessee firearms freedom act we should continute to denounce other unconstitutinoal laws such as the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act which states that it does not matter what the state law says, we trump it. Now this law has absolutly nothing to do with interstate commerece and was simply pushed through by police lobbying orgs. Not tryint to bach the LEOs here but why should they get a federal law that clearly exceeds the authority given to the federal govt by the constitution.

I think we should be able to carry open with out any type of permit.

Loaded (I am ok with empty chamber) on a WMA in a car. Concealed carry on WMA including during archery season.

Legal to take game with Class III weapons. It would be nice to be able to shoot yots or ground hogs with a can to keep the neighbors happy. Why should it be illegal to shoot a deer with a suppressed weapon. Especially in areas where they maybe he houses within earshot. I hunt between the interstate and a farm house. I do not know the guy in the house, just have not had the chance to meet him. Hoever because I like to hunt that property I dont really want to ruin my ability to continue hunting there. I can cut the noise down dramaticly by suppressing that weapon.

There is no reason the legislature couldn't pass a law allowing 'open carry' for all persons who can legally own a handgun... The state constitution allows the legislature to regular the wearing of arms, it doesn't require them to do so. Anyhow technically passing a law that allows open carry for all persons who legally can own a firearm is a type of regulation since it would bar open carry for convicted felons for example.

Open Carry of any weapon should be legal by anyone who can lawfully own the weapon. The Handgun Carry Permit would then just be a license to carry concealed. We're doing well, taking these little steps, though. Eventually we'll get to Vermont Carry!
