HB0962 - VETOED, and over-ride votes.

Postby SomeGuy » Thu May 28, 2009 3:21 pm

Today our glorious Gov Bredeson vetoed restaurant carry.

How long before the legislature can over-ride his veto and remind this anti-gun Democrat what his place is?

i just heard this on the radio, it's time for the people to speak, and to do so loudly. call your reps and demand that they vote to overide this veto and make it law ASAP.

I am sure he will do the same with the parks bill. We need to be on the phone with his office and explain to him that we want this law and the parks law.

We must be mentally and emotionally stunted in comparison to our neighboring states.
Our Govenor and various Police officials do not think we are capable of being responsible adults.
Serpas must have warm fuzzy feelings that for now, only criminals are carrying guns in establishments that serve alcohol.
I hope Monday our Legislature will override the veto.

I expect other gun bills to get vetoed as well.......... CRAP!

How fast could the veto realisticly be over turned? Do both the house and the senate have to vote to overturn it or just one or the other?

What are the realistic odd of it getting overturned?

It's political posturing. He's thinking ahead to the cushy job waiting for him in the District of Criminals. Our legislature is the "bad cop" and he's gonna play the "good cop". But it only needs a simple majority so I expect an override.

John, Im interested to hear your thoughts on this...

bredeson obviously does not trust law abiding citizens, it's that simple, so when you vote for governor next, let it be known you do not trust him, i will be writing my reps immediately, letting them know the same thing, they can be voted out!!!, apparently this man bredeson, lets call him traitor to the constitution is more comfortable with criminal collateral damage than he is with a law abiding citizen exercising his or her 2nd ammendment rights.now that we're facing facism with the government owning private business i see more of this happening if the american public continue's to sit on their hands instead of making a fist and shouting their rage.silence say's nothing to these 3 piece suit wearing criminals.

I believe this will be his last term. He's gunning for a job in DC and this is just him pandering to the liberal establishment that infests that hell hole....

I watched Serpas on ch.2 News at 5. He says because he has investigated shootings in bars himself, he says it happens so fast, that even if someone had a gun in the bar, it wouldn't had made a difference. What a completely ignorant and pathetic statement. So that means any shooting in a bar was strictly a drop of the hat, no confrontation beforehand style shooting, that absolutely no one saw coming.Sure I believe that. I also believe that some day monkeys are going to fly out of my butt.Let's put Bredesen in his place and get this thing passed!!

I would also like to know if we can start any kind of pettition to have the CLEOs that were standing next to them repremanded or even fired. Last time I checked we were paying Serpas to protect our rights to oppose them. Karl Dean should fire him for this stunt but he is just as anti as the rest of them.

By the way here is the video

Serpas is a complete disgrace. He has no business using his position to influence legislation. We should push to pass a bill that keeps unelected, carpet bagging political appointees from using their positions to try and influence & lobby the legislature. His role is to enforce law, not make law.

Can anybody get a list of the officers that were there today and what areas they represent. As far as I am concerend it is fraud, waste, and abuse to use the taxpayers money to buy gas to go to the capital for a press shoot.

Statement From Chris W. Cox, Executive Director NRA - Institute for Legislative Action On Governor Bredesen's Veto Of House Bill 962
Along with more than 200,000 law-abiding Right-to-Carry permit holders in Tennessee, I am disappointed Governor Phil Bredesen vetoed House Bill 962. This bill would extend self-defense rights of permit holders to restaurants. This is a shock and a major disappointment to gun owners and supporters of the Second Amendment because Governor Bredesen had committed to supporting this legislation.

36 other states, including seven states that border Tennessee, provide this protection to law-abiding citizens. During the 2006 campaign, Governor Bredesen assured Tennesseans -- and the NRA in writing -- that he would support this effort. NRA's endorsement of Governor Bredesen that year centered largely on this promise. Today, that trust has been betrayed.

In his veto message, Governor Bredesen talked about his concerns with mixing firearms and alcohol. But he conveniently failed to mention the absolute prohibition, with grim consequences, for any permit holder who has one sip of alcohol while carrying a firearm. He also ignored the provision which allows restaurants to prohibit carrying firearms in their establishments by simply posting a sign. The provisions of HB 962 are more restrictive than the laws of many of the 36 states that allow restaurant carry. And, it is important to note that despite Governor Bredesen's dire predictions, these states have not experienced problems because law-abiding gun owners are just that, law-abiding.

The reality is that crime does happen in our restaurants. We are reminded by the headlines of senseless attacks on honest people that occur in restaurants, cafés and even fast food outlets all across our country, including in Tennessee. On April 2, 2009, Benjamin Felix Goeser was gunned down at Jonny's Sports Bar on Nolensville Road in Nashville. His wife, Nicole Goeser has a Right-to-Carry permit. But, she had to keep her gun locked in the car because of Tennessee law. No one knows what the outcome might have been that evening if Nicole had had her firearm with her. All Nicole wanted was a chance -- a chance to save her husband's life.

House Bill 962 will not bring back Benjamin Goeser or ease Nicole's sorrow. But, it would give other good, law-abiding Tennesseans that chance to defend themselves and their loved ones. The Tennessee Legislature understood that. That is why this common sense measure passed both chambers with overwhelming, bi-partisan support. We pledge to work to override this ill-conceived veto. That is NRA's promise. And we intend to keep it.
I already wrote my letter to bredeson, as follows:

To:
Phil.Bredesen@tn.gov
obviously sir,

you know how to read, or do you? did you not read the bill where it said alcohol consumption by permit carriers while carrying is prohibited, apparently you prefer any criminal collateral damage over the law abiding citizen's right to exercise their 2nd ammendment right!!!!,,,, it simply says,, no it screams one thing about you,,,,,, you do not trust citzens,,!!!!!!!!!,, well sir,,,, i do not trust you,,,,,,not as far as i could throw you, it is my sincere wish that any office you run for from now till forever, until you, honor our forefathers and their wisdom the wisdom that brought greatness to this country,, i hope and will do everything i can muster to ensure you lose your election, talking to and citing your vote history against the citizenry,, my sincerest wish is that american's everywhere will open their eye's to your like, self important, greedy untrusting, selfish politicians, I officially acknowledge my outrage at your disdain for the bill of rights, and our constitution.
b cash

,,,,,, and i meant every word of it!

Bredeson is a lame duck, no election left for him, unless he wants to try for the Senate, or POTUS, neither of which he has announced for.

Fellows, watch what we write. Well formed letters with good punctuation and relevant facts are best. For Bredeson, I won't send anything. However, I may let the Democratic leadership of TN know that this formerly independent voter will abstain for voting for ANY Democrats in 2010 as punishment towards the party (followed by noting that I have voted for some Democrats in past elections, even specifying them, I want the party to see that Bredeson hurt them.) Being reminded that Bredeson was NRA endorsed, and had considerable gun owner support which the next Democrat gubernatorial candidate will not have is a way of possibly getting the party leadership to knuckle to us a bit.

Here's Serpas' arguments against Restaurant / bar carry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pfCRQmxHmE

It would be interesting to compile a list of the arguments the various chiefs have given against this bill in their local press. - Surely, they'd be better than the ones Ronal offers in this video.
