Sheriff Luttrell does NOT support AWB

Postby Pat McGarrity » Wed Oct 20, 2004 6:19 pm

I met with Shelby County Sheriff, Mark Luttrell at the Friends of the NRA Banquet on October 7th. He absolutely made it clear that he does NOT support the reauthorization of the 1994 "assault weapons ban". Sheriff Luttrell could not have been more sincere and gracious in explaining that he had not issued the statement that aired on WMC TV 5, the Memphis NBC affiliate, they had attributed to him on September 12th. I will be meeting with the Sheriff soon and give him a VHS copy of the story and he is going to give me a written statement clarifying that he does NOT support the ban and does support lawful gun owners. I greatly appreciate the Sheriff's time and will work to support his reelection. Following is a letter I mailed to him today:

October 20, 2004

Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
Shelby County Sheriff's Office
201 Poplar Ave.
Room 9-02
Memphis, TN 38103

Dear Sheriff Luttrell:

Thank you for your time at the Friends Of the NRA Banquet, October 7th. It was a pleasure to meet you. I will make you a copy of the tape of the WMC-TV 5 broadcast we discussed and call you to drop it off soon. I appreciate your clarifying your support of lawful gun owners, and was more relieved than I can express, that you do not support the renewal of the unconstitutional, Clinton-Feinstein ban on semi-automatic firearms, as the WMC story had stated.

Besides violating American's civil rights, the so called "assault weapons ban", which restricted cosmetic features of common, semi-automatic firearms, failed to reduced crime. An independent study commissioned by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) states; "We cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation's recent drop in gun violence. And, indeed, there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence". This was published by NIJ and written by Christopher Koper, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

I look forward to your statement and will do everything in my power to see that you receive the full support of the gun rights community.

Sincerely,

Patrick McGarrity, Jr.
