TN Hangun Permit Question

Postby Glockster27 » Sat Jun 05, 2010 11:42 am

I hope this question is in the correct forum. If not feel free to move it and accept my apology.

My daughter wants to get her carry permit. My wife and I also have our permits. So it is no wonder that she wants her's also. I know what she has to do to get her permit But I can not remember the distances that she has to qualify on. I would like her to get some practice shooting at those distances because that is what she is nervous about.

Can anyone help me with the distances?

I think when I shot my qual, I think the furthest we shot was 15 yards, at a full silhouette target like this .

The requirement was to simply hit the target... and I don't think anyone failed.

We did 20 rds each at 3 and 7 yards and 10 rds at 15.

All kidding aside in a nutshell here is the basic course of fire

STATE CERTIFIED HANDGUN SAFETY PROGRAM
Topic IV
Firing Range

48 Rounds (must shoot 70%)

3 yards
7 yards
15 yards
Remaining 12 rounds at ANY DISTANCE BETWEEN 2 (TWO) AND 25 (TWENTY-FIVE) YARDS which can be determined by the training school.

My classes do not go to 25 yards and I stay within the 15, but according to the state lesson plan, it is possible the last 12 shots can be made at 25 yards

Rounds outside the silhouette have a zero value.

It would be sad if NRA instructors are discontinued to be certified as Carry class instructors. I do have more credentials than just the NRA certification but if the NRA instructors are dismisses that will basically leave only law enforcement to teach the classes. I don't know if it is the same letter but NRA instructors cannot teach the State Carry classes, advertising it as NRA course taught by NRA instructors, since it isn't a NRA course. They have to teach it as a State certified instructor and even a POST officer should be teaching it as a state instructor.

If classes are being taught wrong it is the fault of the State. The course outline is no longer on the state website (at least that I can find) For instance look how outdated the video (which is still on VHS tape) is that is to be played complete in the class. It takes longer to explain why the tape is no longer correct than it does to play the tape.

But being a State Instructor with 3 of the specific requirements (one is NRA) of being permit instructor, participating in legislation, and a Life TFA member on John's alert list I keep up with all the changes and apply them to the class so they get up to the minute correct information. OF course I'm not in it for the money, I only teach because I strongly believe that if you can legally buy a gun you should be able to legally carry and defend yourself with it anywhere you go.
