Veterans Heritage Firearms Act

Got this in an email from the VFW and was wonder what impact it may have on TFA members who have firearms inherited from a veteran.


3. Veterans Heritage Firearms Act: The VFW is supporting the Veterans Heritage Firearms Act (S. 798), which was introduced by Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) to allow veterans to register firearms they legally brought home from war many years ago, or bequeathed to their decedents as family heirlooms. The bipartisan measure would open a 90-day window for owners to register weapons that were acquired outside the continental U.S. between June 26, 1934, and Oct. 31, 1968. Said VFW National Commander Richard DeNoyer, "We thank Senator Tester and all his bill supporters for helping to preserve the American right of gun ownership, and for ending a registration dilemma many families may have faced. Now they can proudly and legally keep their family heirlooms in the family."

This will allow a very limited amnesty to register machineguns and other NFA weapons that may be in the attics, closets, and footlockers of WWII and Korea veterans. Right now, an MP40 without paperwork is contraband that will either be seized by ATF and destroyed, or at best cut up into a $1000 parts kit. This bill will allow those firearms to be put on the NFA register. Sadly, it will most likely be poorly advertised and very few weapons will get registered. But for the elderly veterans and their families, it may mean a windfall of a $10-50,000 for the ability to legally sell a functioning C&R machine gun.
