Renew Handgun Permit With Misdemeanor

Can you renew your handgun permit if you had a misdemeanor. I know felonies you cannot. Are there limits or sufferances of misdemeanors? Are there separate law restrictations on handgun renewals for counties in Tennessee or all follow same requirements and restrictions? Reason I am asking County Deputy Sheriff said no problem renewing handgun permit with past misdemeanor, but I am doubting his information. I do not want give the $50.00 then find out I am rejected. Would I lose the $50.00 if rejected? Thanks so much for your support........JWW
