S&W Model 66, 620, 627

I am looking into the getting a S&W .357 for personal carry. I've never been a big fan of the extremely snubbie revolvers, but obviously something with a 6 inch or longer barrel would be very difficult to conceal, so I looking at models with 4 inch barrels. Does anyone have any experience with the S&W model 66, 620, or 627?

My roommate has a 620. He got it back when they were under $500. Its an awesome revolver. But I must say, I have a Ruger .357 with a 4 inch barrel and its size still makes it difficult to carry, for me anyway.

Just to throw this out...I didn't think I wanted a snubbie either until I realized how great they are for carrying (before I carried a Walther PPK). I just got a Taurus .327 and I LOVE IT. Since its a newer round and not as many people carry it, I have had no problem finding ammo and since it takes a few different .32 rounds, I have stocked up on .32 S&W Long. 50 Rounds is still less than $15.

Over the years, I've had a couple of S&W M-65s (fixed sight K-frame), with 3" heavy barrel & round butt. In my opinion,
that's the optimum configuration for a mid-framed .357 Mag. Excellent balance & controlability, conceals & carries well, too.
Unless you just have to have adjustable sights, don't discount the M65 (or it's blued cousin, the M13)--if you can find one!

Since the kids came along, disposable income is a thing of the past, so I don't look much any more!

I got a S&W 620 about a year ago. I've only put 150 rounds of .357 and 150 rounds of .38 Special through it, but to the best of my limited knowledge, I'd say it's worth it. Trying to get a job so I can save up and get some training. The 620 has a two-piece barrel; some people are okay with this and some aren't.

I have read good things about the 66. People who have a 686 or 686+ seem to like it a lot. Haven't read much on the 627, but I expect it's pretty good.

If you do carry a revolver with a four-inch barrel, make sure you get a sturdy gun belt and holster to go with it. I got both of these from Tucker Gun Leather and like them pretty well (links below).
