Here is an excerpt from Rep. Tre' Hargett's "Week in Review" dated 4-1-2004:

A bill sponsored by House Republican Leader Tre Hargett (R-Bartlett) that would allow holders of concealed firearm permits to carry a handgun into restaurants and sporting events has been held up in a House subcommittee. On Tuesday, the House Constitutional Protections subcommittee voted against the bill along partisan lines, with 3 Republicans for, 3 Democrats against, and 1 Democrat not voting.

The bill proposed allowing those with handgun carry permits to bring their firearms into restaurants and other public places where alcohol is served. This would have included sporting events, golf courses and bowling alleys as well. The bill would not allow the permit holders to drink alcoholic beverages while carrying a weapon. Under the legislation, businesses would have the option of banning handguns by posting a sign. According to one source, not one of the 150,000 Tennesseans who have concealed carry permits have been convicted of a felony related to their weapon in the decade since concealed carry became law.

David --

Any chance of finding out who was the DemoncRAT that didn't vote? Just curious if it might have been NRA "A" rated Coleman; would that be a big surprise? Since the tie vote meant defeat for the bill he could have abstained so he could later say he didn't vote against gun owners but could watch the bill be defeated which was what Brook, Briley and McMillan would most likely want. That would also make him look more acceptable to gun owners in his district come election time. I guess we must not have many TFA members in his district as I don't recall seeing any posts.

With the current partisan split in the CPSC, maybe Tre and Ben need to get their bills into other committees where they might receive more favorable treatment. I don't know whether that is possible or not. It's pretty apparent that our legislators still fear the armed citizen although it's clear that we have never posed any threat to them, law enforcement, or the public at large. Of course facts have never been of much concern to those who wish to strip us of our constitutional rights.

I still think we need to try and get Henri Brooks removed from the "Constitutional Protection" subcommittee. Someone who won't even stand for the pledge and who thinks our flag is "racist," doesn't seem like the type of person who would be interested in "protecting our constitutional right  I don't know if a letter writing campaign would work or not but it seems like we need to do something about the rather bad joke on the voting taxpayers in this state.

Hi Bill.

I've been told "second hand" that Coleman was the abstaining vote, and have emailed John that note. Typical dance, typical waffle. We at least know we have his attention as he is acting like he's afraid of voting against it. Let him spend the time and money and effort to explain that he really is not against the gun owners. We know better, we just need to help get the word out about him within his district.

Interesting idea about Tre' and Ben West and a new strategy, but don't know how that would work.

Don't think a letter writing campaign about Henri Brooks would have any effect. We can support those who would oppose her, and we can support those who oppose the leaders of her party. Vote 'em out and problem is solved.

The good news I found in the info up above is how much Tre' Hargett, the Republican Leader of the House, has moved to support us.

Will have a bit more in the next day or two about this year's races of the "stalling" folks you mention above.

Take care.
