TFA Member Bob James to Wharton on Anti-Gun Mayor's Group

Postby Pat McGarrity » Tue Sep 15, 2009 3:35 pm

This is an Excellent letter written by TFA Member, Bob James. I first reported on this anti-gun group two and a half years ago, that has yet to be prosecuted for using illegal straw gun purchases in order to sue the gun industry:

Subject: Mayor A.C. Wharton & Mayor's Against Illegal Guns

Dear Mayor A. C. Wharton,

I wrote you two times asking for a confirming note that you approve of the radical agenda of this coalition you belong to, and if you understood what the prime objective was. You failed to reply so I have to believe that you are much too busy with your campaign for City Mayor to answer the simple question or just not concerned about my personal freedom of ownership and privacy in this matter. I begin today contacting every gun club and member as well as friends and family in and around the Memphis area that you are a member in good standing with “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” or as I like to call them Mayors Against All Guns in America.

When New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino--both virulently anti-gun mayors--formed a new anti-gun group a few years ago, they envisioned the creation of a powerful force to lobby for new gun control laws. But in assembling their coalition, they failed to take two important things into account: first, the response of gun owners to this new threat, and second, that many mayors would not take kindly to being misled regarding the real purpose of Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG.)

Over the past few years, even as they continue to claim they are only concerned with "illegal" guns, MAIG has worked to impose new restrictions on law-abiding gun owners by regulating guns shows, supporting reckless lawsuits against the firearm industry, and opposing the right of self-defense for law-abiding Americans with carry permits. Mayor Bloomberg, who sets the agenda for this radical group, is dedicated to the passage of highly restrictive gun laws. In an appearance on "Meet the Press," Bloomberg announced that he would raise money to counter the influence of the NRA.

But there is a growing glitch in Bloomberg's plan. More and more mayors are discovering the real purpose of MAIG, and are removing their names from the group's list. After hearing from their constituents, over 40 mayors of the initial 250 have resigned from the group since it's inception.

Your name was not among those that saw through the big city rhetoric. I trust this issue is as important to other gun owners as it is to me.

Sincerely, Robert James, Shelby County, Tennessee
