Current run time for HCP/renewals

I sent in my renewal in mid Feb, and am still sitting around, with my carry permit expiring in less than a week. I expect I will be denied my right to carry for a while, but I am curious if anyone has a general idea on how far behind our friendly neighborhood bureaucrat is running.

If you attempted to renew by mail, you will in fact spend some time sans your permit, as the average time for return of renewal is 4 months. Had you done it in person at the local DOT, your receipt stands in for your permit should it lapse prior to the return of your new one from the State.

You should have received a letter back from TDOS acknowledging your renewal application and advising that you could retain your old permit and that letter and/or a receipt of payment (e.g., canceled check) as evidence that the permit remains valid pending the renewal process.

I received my renewal notice letter from TDOS in yesterday's mail (12 May 09).

John, as usual, is correct. The letter states: "If you renew by mail prior to the expiration date on your permit, we will mail you a letter
stating you may continue to carry a weapon as long as you keep a copy of this letter with your expired permit in your possession."

Which means, if you haven't received that letter, you need to get on the phone to them NOW! It also means that you'll be carrying a folded
8-1/2" x 11" piece of paper in your wallet for a while (been there, done that a couple of renewals ago...).

I've been purposely been awaiting receipt of this letter (which came approximately 60 days prior to expiration) to begin my renewal process,
with the intent to track & report on the process & time involved.

I'll keep you posted...literally.

David

Guess I'll add my bit.
I also received my renewal letter yesterday (5-12-09). Permit expires in Aug.
Almost 90 days notice. However, I opted to renew early  .
Went to Safety Dept 4-24-09 and did the permit renewal. (I heard renewals have been slow)
I am also keeping track of the time to receipt of the new card.
I forgot, from my last renewal, if my duplicate arrived in the same packet... (age/memory issues)
( yeah, I spent the big bucks for an extra copy of my permit, again)
I'll share info as it becomes available.
George

Made application for renewal in person March 6, 2009, (check cleared my account March 9, 2009), still have not seen or heard anything from them.

Call them. They are SWAMPED. There is a girl there named Jessica, I think. She is very nice and helpful. When I got my permit I literally received it on the 90th day...

I submitted my app in person, at the local DOT office.

Ben,

You are correct. It was a DoS office, I should have just said the DMV. Not that I think it matters, but I used the North Shore one.

An interesting side bar, I applied to renew my drivers license lat week via the internet. Received my new license in the mail yesterday, 6 days from application. The web site says that using this method, the picture on the license will be the old drivers license photo. When I opened the letter containing the new license, it has the picture that was taken for my HCP permit renewal, not the old drivers license one??

So, somewhere in the system is the new picture taken in March, it was applied to my new drivers license, but I have still not received my new Carry permit!

And it arrived today. Dated that it was issued on the 5th of June. Roughly four months, when you factor in mailing time.

Received mine today, it is dated 6/03. Took from 3/06 to 6/13, not too bad I guess.

I renewed in person at the Springfield, TN TDOS on April 13. I still have not received my new permit, but the man there said to expect a 90 day wait and tomorrow (7/6) will be one week short of that. I did not receive a notice that I had renewed, but I did receive one with an application a few weeks ago reminding me to renew.

As has been said, the TDOS man said that my copy of the application will stand as a permit in the event the new permit came after its expiration. Mine expires 9/07/09, so surely it'll be here by then.

The State needs to hire more workers to expedite this process since we are having to obtain a permit to exercise a right and are paying a fee in addition! That would at least be a source for a few more jobs.

Finally got it! I applied for my renewal on April 13 and it came in the mail July 16. That's 94 days. They did say at the Springfield, TN TDOT office that it would be at least 90 days. So make sure you apply for renewal at least 3+ months in advance of your expiration date.

I had to renew my driver's license and carry permit in January, figured I would do it online. Nope. It said I couldn't renew online, I had to show up in person and present proof of citizenship. Again.

So I got to take my passport down and waste 3 hours sitting there waiting to be called.

They said that they were doing background checks on everyone again, which I assume accounts for the long delay in receiving the cards. Otherwise I think I'd replace the contractor that's printing the cards. It took a little over 4 months for mine to show up.

I can only assume having to do that again was fallout from a few years back when they were handing out driver's licenses to anyone who wanted one.

I recently went in person to renew my carry permit and those driver's license places are sure in no hurry. Since the station opened at 7 AM I went at 6:30 and was number 7 in line. I finally got out of there at about 9AM.
