I need some advice about importing a handgun

BLUF (bottom line up front) - How do I import a firearm (handgun, in this case) purchased in Honduras into the US?

I own a small house (shack) in Honduras and my wife and I like to go down and spend a couple of weeks hanging out on the beach. The "gun culture" down there is great... instead of a "coat check" at the entrance to most restaraunts, they have a "gun check"; turn in your firearm (everything from a .380 to a MP5), pick it back up after dinner on the way out... There are some great deals on weapons and I'd like to purchase one and bring it back home. Legal weapon...Not an NFA (yet) How do I import it? I brought some back when I was going back and forth from Germany in the Army (till '07 when I retired), it wasn't that difficult, but did involve BATF(E) paperwork. Can I just bring it back in a locked case? I spent this afternoon looking online for information, but it hasn't been fruitful. Can anyone shed some light on this and let me know what I need to do? We're going down in May and I'd like to bring something back...
