Dear Senator Alexander,
I am a member of the Tennessee Firearms Association, and I have just received a copy of your letter to Mr. Charles Thoms dated August 7, 2008. When I read between the lines, I determined that this issue is not important to you. Why isn’t it?
Allowing law abiding citizens to carry loaded handguns in our national parks is a no brainer. It will reduce crime and it will protect citizens from possible wild animal attacks. This is a proven statistical fact. Are you a wolf in sheep’s clothing? (Interpretation: Are you really a conservative Republican?)
Over the last several years, TFA members, including notably David Borum, have been working on efforts to change the rules which impact whether handgun permit holders may possess their firearms in the federal parks and related resources in Tennessee. Apparently, you do not believe so, but frankly your letter to Mr. Thoms is so unresponsive it’s hard to tell. I have attached a copy for your review.
Following the District of Columbia vs. Heller decision, what part of "... shall not be infringed ..." do our elected officials not understand? I listen to what any candidate says, but I watch their voting record on two key issues to determine if I will vote for them. Those two issues are abortion and guns. These two issues will usually show me that they are on my moral side.
I hope you will reexamine your position on allowing guns in our national parks. It’s that important.
Sincerely,
Ben Burke
