Posted: Burglars will be shot and killed sign

I ran across a link to this sign in an www.opencarry.org forum message.

http://tinyurl.com/5w36td

Someone else adapted the sign to the proper TN code citation.

I can guess at some reasons why a homeowner wouldn't want to post such a sign and some why he would want to post such a sign. My first thought was if that sign is posted and you shoot someone inside your house the sign will be used as evidence you shoot without due consideration. Obviously the sign has some deterrent value for burglars and also some value in where burglars looking for guns should go to work.

My question is what do experienced gun owners think about some indication that your house belongs to a gun owner. If not the sign above, what about something similar to an alarm company yard sign. I've seen one that says "this house protected by 2nd Amendment".

Is it best to be a covert gun owner or slightly more public about owning the gun. Both approaches seem to make sense to me.

Covert is my option. Less likely to temp a thief if they have no reason to believe I have a firearm potentially left at the house because I have gone to dinner at a nice family restaurant.

I agree with John. I would prefer to have the element of suprise. Plus I don't want to advertise that there might be a gun to steal when I'm not home. I have a Brinks Security system and a Brinks sign in my yard.

Of course, a sign that says

"Neighbor Watch - Augmented by Zeiss" would not be too bad if it was on the light poles!

that sign has got to be the dumbest sign that I have ever seen. Why dont they just put up a sign that says . Please brake in I want to shot someone , or make sure I'm not home to cash in on my guns or Please trespass I want to commit premeditated murder. Just the thing we need to win over the hearts and minds of the Liberals , a redneck sign, that says I'm stupid and got a gun too. Please dont take offense, but please the sign is hanging on his front porch. bad ju-ju.

I could see the same argument being made for having a TFA sticker in the rear window of your car that sits in your driveway at night (or ANY gun-related or pro-2A stickers, for that matter) and yes, I understand that if the car is there, you most likely are too. But that doesn't help if thieves are simply casing houses to rob later. Then again, IF they know I have a gun, at least SOME of them are going to move down the road to a potentially easier target. It won't stop ALL of them, granted, and it MIGHT even attract some. But the ones it would attract are the type that are crazy enough to do the home invasion stuff anyway and I don't know that the loss of surprise at my being armed is outweighed by at least SOME of the other types passing me by in the first place.

This reminds me of the whole open/concealed carry argument. There ARE two sides, and both could make a reasonable argument in a court of law. But the way I see it, at least they would be arguing at my trial and not my funeral...

This is akin to carrying openly and posting Rangemaster stickers all over your car. All you're doing is letting the bad guy know what you have, ruining your "element of surprise".
