Current wait time for carry permit

Postby mathdude » Wed Jun 17, 2009 10:08 pm

Does anyone know the current average wait time for obtaining a TN carry permit? I filled out the application and was fingerprinted on May 12. I know this is no where near the 90 days, but I'm interested in knowing if I can expect it soon.

I waited about 3 and a half months, called, two weeks later, roughly 4 months after initial app I got it. I only got it last week. Expect to wait.

134 days after application.
1 phone call after 60 days.
Another call after 90 days.

The calls didn't seem to help me.

Interesting, I called this morning and they said my permit would be issued this week and I can expect to receive it in around 2 weeks, only counting business days. We'll see if that's true!!

I hope so !

My long wait must've been due to my questionable background.

My initial HCP application took about 8 weeks back in 2001. I remember submitting my application about the first or second week of July and receiving my permit in September just before the 9-11 WTC tragedy occurred. I filed for my 2nd renewal on April 13 and was told by the DMV man in Springfield TN that it would take approximately 90 days , or about 13 weeks. He said it takes that long because of the growing number of people currently applying for the first time in addition to the every 4 year renewals of the larger number of permits being renewed.

Since the State is taking in money from those of us who are being required to obtain a permit to exercise a right, it should at least be required to process them expeditiously--probably something the legislature should address.

" A right delayed is a right denied." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Ironically,, many that lay claim to the mantle of his civil rights legacy are for the government either restricting or denying the right to armed self-defense, something that has always been the primary historical aspect of slavery.

Mine was "issued" after only 6 weeks but took a total of 5 months to get it delivered to me. I had to go as far as getting a PO Box just so the permit would make it to me without being rejected by the post office for a 4th time.

This procedure needs a change.

If I can renew my driver's license and professional license on line, why not my HCP?

Looking around our local Safety Center makes me VERY aware of why I started carrying in the first place.

It took 3 months exactly to get mine. I called 2 weeks before and was told it was scheduled to be issued the next week.

I have heard overwhelmingly on other forumsn that a call to the DOS will result in triggering it being issued. I would wait about 3-4 weeks then call. My $$ would say a call will result in getting it much quicker.

Call the number listed for renewals - http://www.tennessee.gov/safety/handgun/renewals.htm.
