Newbie here...

Postby stevek » Wed Jul 11, 2007 9:00 pm

Newbie here. My wife and I are planning to escape NJ within the next year, and we are pretty sure that we will be looking at northeastern TN as the general destination. We are both avid shooters, and have our Florida CCW permits. I am a RN, with quite a bit of experience, so I generally can get a job without much difficulty. A couple questions...
1. Any particular towns or areas to look at in that section of the state? We are looking for 20-50 acres with a house where could hopefully shoot on our property. We are looking for a small town/rural feel, but close enough (1-2 hr drive) to a city for concerts/events. Prefer mountains and trees to flatlands. Looking to stay in a conservative or libertarian climate politically.
2. Is TN secure in it's RKBA or do y'all see this becoming a problem down the road? Don't want to have to deal with NJ type nonsense ever again...

I'm sure I'll have quite a few more questions along the way, but thanks in advance for any help. :)

I live north of Memphis in Covington,Tenn. Small rural town, but a little to close to Memphis and all their crooks (mayor being the biggest one)and crime for me. Nashville is nice and theres small towns around it. We visited Chattanooga and really liked it. I wouldnt rush into it. Move somewhere close temporarily and take your time looking for that perfect home. Im at coulter363@bellsouth.net, if you want to email me. I'll send some pics of Covington and pamphlets about the town. Maybe some others could do the same near Nashville and Chattanooga.

Hi Stevek, I'm originally from NJ came to TN in 2001, this is a great state. I live 60 miles west of Nashville in a small town of 1700 people. Trying to get my kids to move here and get out of NJ. My former mechanic from NJ now live around the Knoxville area. Enjoy.

Regarding your worry about TN turning into NJ, I do not see that happening. If we get NJ laws, it will be by force of the FedGov.

As for location, even though I head the Chattanooga Chapter, I advise you against living in Hamilton County. Maybe a surrounding county, but not inside this county. After I get my BSN, I will be leaving it myself.

Not firearms related.

Taxes, bad schools, bad county leadership, you catch the drift.

On the tax front it seems the county commission (and some city councils) like annual tax increases. Yes, I said annual. There is always a tax increase somewhere. Over the protestations of most of the county, we had a wheel tax (oops, I mean emissions test) imposed.

Schools...let me put it this way, I was in them. I still refer to it as 'my time as a guest of the government'. It was like a prison. The school leadership is composed of a bunch of education bureaucrats who demand tens of millions of new dollars a year, or else they can't afford to do things like put textbooks in classrooms. Nevermind that 25% of their budget (about 60% of the county's funds) never gets passed the central office. If you have kids, and live in this county, you need to put them in private education, or home school. If you love them, they will never set foot in a government facility. Do note, I did not say an educational facility, because they aren't educational. I could go on about how enrollment drops (or stagnates) every year, yet they demand more money, even though the budget was 312,844,855 for 2007. (Total revenues for 2004 was 285,675,889.)

After all that ranting, I feel better, but can't exactly say I need to start on county leadership. (If you want, I can.) There are a lot of opportunities for a Nurse in Chattanooga and the surrounding area, sure. Just live in a surrounding county and commute. Sequatchie is nice for example.

SG,
Thanks for the info. We will be leaving NJ for many reasons, and it sounds as though HC is wanting to be NJ :x  Will continue to look into the situation.

It isn't that bad around here. All that said, I am a Nursing student, and plan to either move towards the Knox county area, or the Johnson City area after I graduate. I may also decide to just find a really small quiet rural hospital to work at.

I will give Hamilton County one thing, they have great opportunities for a Nurse. This is why I suggested a commute from a surrounding county. Just a thought. Good luck.

Try Dunlap or Pikeville or Crossville for backyard shooting

Postby marshall » Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:19 am

I live in Signal Mtn, which is a nice place, but in Hamilton Cty. One nice thing about living on the W. side of Hamilton County is that you will be close to the free shooting range in the Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area. SG is right about Hamilton Cty taxes and public schools. It's always another tax, and you must get your car checked for emissions. That can cost you thousands if it won't pass. (But they let the semi's drive through in droves all day long without emission checks.)

Thanks doc, but emission testing has been the norm here in NJ for quite some time, just recently went to every 4 years instead of every year
SG, regarding nursing opportunities, I have specialized in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), and have been the Nurse Manager for the largest SCI/vent unit in the country, and am currently the SCI Research Nurse Coordinator for a well known acute rehabilitation facility. Any particular facilities I should look into?

If you want research, I couldn't say. If you want a more clinical atmosphere I have a few ideas off hand...

Regarding rehabilitation, the best place I could suggest is Siskin. I have done clinicals there. Nice place. My Grandmother has been there for rehab after surgery, they take damn good care of their patients. Very clean facility. Top notch. Far as I can tell, they do almost any kind of rehab you need.

We have a Level 1 Trauma Center at Erlanger, so if you want to be ER I am sure they could use you.

There is also a facility in the area (do not know exact location) that specializes in brain damage; I would wager they could use a spinal cord specialist. Could be wrong.

I don't know exactly where you want to be, but you can look at a few of the hospitals job applications online.

We have three main systems that have dozens of hospitals in my area.

Erlanger, Memorial, and Parkridge.

Erlanger has the Level 1 Trauma center. I have heard stories they aren't the easiest to work for. Might be worthless rumors, might have a basis in reality. I know the management is making mistakes, they recently got slapped with a multi million dollar fine. (When I say multi, I am talking tens of millions, not just two or three.)

Memorial is becoming heavily specialized regarding anything cardiovascular. If I had a heart problem, I would make best speed for a Memorial facility. I have done clinicals there, they are a good facility. I would not mind working for them. There is some kind of title that is highly coveted regarding a hospitals status, and Memorial is supposedly very close to attaining it for there cardio abilities. They also have a spine center, it may be what you want.

Parkridge is the third. I know little about them, but you can look at their job applications online and see what they have to offer.

We also have multiple mental hospitals, if that is what floats your boat. (Did my clinical rotation at one, yah, I will avoid MH Nursing.)

Check the individual websites for job applications. If I misunderstood, tell me exactly what you want to do, and I will share what I know.

Curious about ccw and hospitals in Chattanooga area...

Postby marshall » Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:07 am

Howdy SG,

Just curious, do ALL the hospitals have a policy forbidding employees to carry handguns on their properties?

I have never seen an employee handbook for any of the local facilities.

I do know for a fact that Erlanger downtown is posted, as is the main Memorial facility. Memorial's is not posted properly per TN law (and I am not telling them), however I cannot remember if Erlanger is properly posted or not.

Best guess: It is prohibited. Much as I hate it, the entire health/nursing/medical industry has a decidedly left lean. I know of no particular segment that is better than uninvolved in political leanings. Some sections, such as mental health, are all but openly red.

SG, once again thanks for the information. I would like to stay with SCI if possible. I will start looking through some of the SCI websites for possible locations as we get closer to escaping the PRNJ
