Background checks for HCP holders.

It seems to me that the State is going to far when HCP holders purchase a handgun. What’s the point of checking our background? It’s just another cost to the buyer and revenue for the Federal, State and Local Government. As HCP holders we have already had our background checked six ways from Sunday. We’ve given up our finger prints to AFIS, smiled and paid our money. We also pay again at renewal time. This just is not fair. Some States do not charge for background checks. Why does Tennessee? I haven’t researched this year’s legislation yet but if this issue is not being addressed, it should be. What do we need to do to get the ball rolling to get this on the agenda?

But how are they to know that you haven't had your CCP revoked within the last month or so?

The chance that something recent might or even would be missed seems a lot better than not knowing about convictions, orders of protection, etc that might have happened one or two or three years ago.

I suspect that before it would be prudent to allow HCPs to replace instant background checks when purchasing from an FFL dealer, there would have to be some system put in place to help ensure that if, subsequent to issuing/renewing a HCP, something happens that does make a person ineligible to buy/possess a firearm, that the documentation is automatically and consistently forwarded to the state who would then suspend the permit (just like a DL can be suspended). If such a system was in place then the HCP would no longer be a static document that can only attest to a person's background as of a certain date; instead, it would become a good (not perfect but good) indicator of a person's current background and would make the "instant background check" pretty meaningless.

Good point RobertNashville. I don't have a problem with having my background checked. Just don't charge me for doing it. Nothing has to change with the way in information flows and is updated. If the background check information has a chance that it is flawed and not current then I why run the check at all? If I do anything that violates the laws that allow me to keep my HCP it should be take away on the spot. Seems like this just goes round n round. You can check my background all you want, just don't charge for doing it.
