Anything I should know about carrying in Memphis?

Postby Dean L » Sat Jan 16, 2010 8:23 am

I am taking a trip with my wife in march. We will be staying at a hotel downtown next to the FedEx form. Are there Anti-gun hotels? I'm not really familiar with Memphis, as I am from east TN. Thanks.

Like Mike said, going to Memphis for an overnight stay is the only time I've ever carried a pocket pistol & a full sized pistol simultaneously..

TFA does have a pretty active chapter in Memphis that is headed up by Pat McGarity (see the forum section for the chapter). They meet at Range USA which is a nice indoor range in East Memphis that is owned by a TFA member. If you are there long, at least consider the opportunity to do a little shooting.

Thanks guys. I was thinking about getting a pocket pistol, now I have a good excuse. I think we will be there for about a week so I will check out that range John. I was thinking about that Ruger LCR or maybe a S&W 442. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

David, a friend of mine just got a s&w 642. They are nice especially with the crimson trace laser grips. Maybe a black 340pd with the C/T grips? If only they weren't so pricey. I think every thing will be fine on our trip, My wifes going to be in class all day at UT Memphis so I think I will take Johns advice and check out Range USA. Looked at the website, looks like you can get a good lunch, and some practice all at one place, nice. Thanks again guys.

Just remember Mikes Rules # 1,2,3, 4 Always carry a BUG and keep them all close by. You should be fine. We were there last year & had no problems.

If you go out in the evening be aware that some of the hotels not only lock the lobby doors but also the parking lots.

I got in late and found parking garage locked with a rolled down door. (Can't remember the hotel but it was just down the street from the Peabody)

I got lucky as the guard was out making rounds and he let me in.

I won't even leave the tour bus on a side street anymore.

Yeah, there are certain parts of Memphis where THIS would be the preferred carry gun...

Just to reiterate Mike's post about Rule #1...

I came in this evening after being out buying a heat lamp for one of my snake's cages. Well, the bulb was damaged (broken filament) and I thought, well, I'll just run by and grab another.

So, I left with my LCP sitting in my bathroom, just a quick out and back, no worries, right? Well, had to stop and get gas.. and as I'm inside picking up a drink, I hear the clerk talking about a recent incident in the parking lot involving a few individuals and some vandalism and possible robbery. And I'm thinking great, here I am with some punks running around and I don't even have a pocket knife on me... Lesson learned.

Moral of the story, see Rule #1...

Not to say that Memphis isn't a lovely place most days, but even the Garden of Eden had law breakers...
