Maryville Opposes Constitution Opts out on Parks

Maryville voted unanimously to opt out on Parks Carry. It was a surprise that this was on the Agenda. All I could find was a meeting but no agenda was listed that I could find.

Let's return the no vote to them next election





MAYOR TOM TAYLOR



Tom Taylor was first elected to City Council in June, 2001, served as Vice Mayor from 2003-2008, and was elected by vote of council to the position of Mayor in 2008. His term ends in November 2012.



A native of Maryville, Tennessee, Tom is a graduate of Maryville High School and Maryville College. His education also includes graduate work at UT Medical Units in Memphis and the UT Graduate Program in Ecology.



Taylor is an owner of Commercial Cutting Equipment, Inc, which sells and services commercial lawn equipment through dealerships in Maryville and Knoxville. He was a partner with other family members in Drake Auto Parts from 1974-2004. He and his wife were owners of Morningside Inn where they restored the former Maryville College president's home into a restaurant and ran the business from 1985-1992. Taylor served as an instructor in the Department of Biology at Maryville College and was Director of the USDI Youth Conservation Corps at Tremont in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park from 1971-1976.


Mayor Taylor has been affiliated with the Boys Scouts of America since childhood. An Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver himself, he has served as a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Explorer Advisor, Venture Crew Leader, District Committee Chair, and member of the Great Smoky Mountain Council Executive Board. He was Chair of the Great Smoky Mountains Association and serves on the Advisory Board of the Civic Arts Center. He was Chair of the Board of Trustees during the building of the Blount County Public Library, served as Chair of the Fort Loudoun Regional Library System, and was Chair of the Tennessee Advisory Council on Libraries.



Taylor and his wife Nan have two children, Robert (wife Katie) and Benton. They are members of Broadway United Methodist Church in Maryville.

Andy White was elected to the Maryville City Council in November 2006. His term ends 2010.

Born and raised in Athens, Tennessee, Councilman White graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Transportation and Logistics. He is the co-founder of Strata-G, LLC, a professional services company that provides engineering and technical service.


Councilman White is active in several community organizations including the Blount Chamber, Maryville Kiwanas, United Way, Boy Scouts of America and the Relay for Life. He and his wife Kahren have two children, Sara Kate and Delaney, and are members of the First United Methodist Church in Maryville.




COUNCILMAN JOE SWANN


Joe Swann was first elected to the Maryville City Council in 1997 and served as vice mayor until his June 2003 vote by council to the position of mayor.

A native of Maryville, Swann is President of Workshop Tools, Inc. in Pigeon Forge. He was co-owner of Cherokee Lumber Co. in Maryville for almost 30 years. Mayor Swann is a past chair of the Blount County Industrial Development Board, the Blount County Chamber of Commerce, and the Tellico Reservoir Development Agency. He also served as president of the East Tennessee Historical Society from 1999-2002 and as past president of the Blount County Historic Trust. Swann¹s brother, Art, is a former County Commissioner and State Legislator.

Swann's wife, Becky, is a Maryville native and has served as director of the Maryville City Schools Foundation. The Swanns have 3 sons Ben, Will and Tony Ellis. His term on council ends in November 2012.




COUNCILMAN TOMMY HUNT


Tommy Hunt was elected as councilman in November 2006 for a four year term. A native of Cottage Grove, Tennessee, he is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin and the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.

Hunt is President of Calloway Oil Company, a distributor of Exxon and Phillips 66 motor fuels in East Tennessee. Very active in community organizations, Hunt has served in several capacities for the Blount County Chamber: President in 2001, Transportation Chair, 1997-2000, Vice President of Economic Development in 1996 and on the Board of Directors since 1991. In addition, he is a past member of the UT National Alumni Association Board of Governors and served as Chairman of the Blount County 1101 Planning Committee.



A member of First Methodist Church, Councilman Hunt and his wife Carol Ann have three daughters, Julia, Emily, and Laura.



COUNCILMAN FRED METZ

Fred Metz was appointed to City Council to fill the term of the late Councilman Ron Ivens. His term ends November 2010.



Born and raised in Fairfield, Alabama, Fred Metz graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Public Administration and received a Masters degree in City Planning from the University of Tennessee. Metz is currently partner and co-owner of Dunn and Metz Appraisal Group, a real estate appraisal and consulting firm, and has been a real estate appraiser for the past 25 years.



Metz was appointed to the Maryville Regional Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals in 1989. He was elected Chairman of the Planning Commission in 1998 and held that position until his appointment to City Council.



Metz has served the community as President of the Maryville College Parents Association, Board of Directors Blount County Habitat for Humanity, and coached youth baseball at Maryville Little League. He is a graduate of Leadership Blount and currently on the Board of Directors Tennessee Chapter of the Appraisal Institute.



Councilman Metz and his wife Sophia have two sons, Eric and Ellis, and are members of New Providence Presbyterian Church.
