Saw this article in the local school system newsletter. Thought it might start an interesting forum thread.

The following article was included in the Knox County Schools "Superintedent's Newsletter"

Utah Teachers can bring guns to school.
School administrators in Utah are grappling with a new law that allows school staff - including teachers, custodians, and bus drivers - to carry guns on campus.

The law overturns 1995 legislation designating a 1,000 - foot gun-free-zone around schools.

Proponents of the measure argue that allowing school staff to carry concealed guns will make school safer.

"Suppose a criminal is stalking you or your family. Would you feel safe putting a sign in front of your home saying, this home is a gun-free zone?" asked John Lott of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.

The Utah School Board Association (the USBA) opposed the legislation .... The Jordan School District recently informed teachers that although they have the right to carry a concealed weapon, they will be in breach of contract if they fire it unlawfully and will be subject to disciplinary sanctions, which would include termination.

Secondly, we all have heard the carry permit instructors mention that the only way to carry on school grounds is if picking up or discharging passengers and the gun is untouched. While this is an affirmative defense, it's not all of the law. See John's book on the school grounds issue ............. Comments?
