Banning Locations List

Postby Marswolf » Wed Oct 29, 2003 7:03 am

Is there still a list of businesses in Tennessee that ban carrying handguns?

I couldn't find it on the site. Closest I could come was the letter generator.

However, this list has some inaccuracies such as Walmart, which does allow concealed carry. Also, many places do not post a no handgun sign, some do not post the correct no handgun sign. I believe many stores do not know that the "announce" part of the law was removed a few years ago.

Thanks for the reply. Boy that page is well hidden. :(

I knew about the Walmart situation. As far as I know their policy of allowing concealed (but not open) carry is still in effect. We have a brand new Walmart Superstore in Bristol. Just opened yesterday. I'll have to check it out for signs.

Re: Banning Locations List (Tivoli)

Postby MDTN » Fri Feb 20, 2009 10:41 am

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Tivoli in Chattanooga has a no weapons policy. I was in contact with them this week and they currently make no exception for permit holders. I encourage you to flood the Tivoli with letters asking them to revise their policy and to not support their business. Furthermore, they do not post any sign on any entrance stating this policy. All patrons were padded down/frisked for weapons while entering for a concert in February 2009. So be aware of this.

If its concealed and you keep it concealed, unless of course you need it, how would anyone know you even have it to escort you off premises? Conceal it, smile at the "greeter" as you go in and ask how his/her day is and go about your business.

I also think that we need a separate page with a list specifically of banning locations. Preferably with a direct link to it from the home page. It's so important for us to take our business to places that support our right to self defense and to remove our business from places that don't. I understand that it would be difficult to keep an accurate updated statewide list, but it might help keep a permit holder from getting caught in a place where they didn't realize weapons were banned. Now that restaurant carry is in effect I intend to document local banning businesses and send in to the TFA to be added to a list. I hope everyone else will too.

The link to contact TFA to report a location that has posted no longer works.

I believe we need a list, not a forum, possibly without replies (unless there is additional info or inaccuracies to report) where users can enter the name and location of the business along with whether or not the posting conforms to the law.

I don't disagree but we need to get one or two people who are willing to take on the task of preparing and keeping the list up. I have done it in the past and its not that bad a task but its something I just don't have the time to do.

I just wrote the following letter to Fred Smith, CEO of FedEx.

Mr. Fred Smith, President & CEO
FedEx Corp.
942 South Shady Grove Road
Memphis, TN 38120

Dear Mr. Smith,

AccuLab has been a FedEx customer for many years, even though a small one. Today, upon walking into the Jackson, TN, service center on Pipkin Road to ship a package, I saw a sign to the right of the door effectively barring anyone carring a handgun (the sign did not picture a rifle or shotgun or bow) or a knife and I was highly offended.

This past December I took a course and successfully obtained a “carry permit” to go armed, primarily with a pistol. In September of this year, I will complete a two day course designed to further my knowledge and practice in carrying a firearm for protection. Your sign offends me greatly because I am not a criminal and I consider myself a model citizen. It is offensive to me and other permit holders that FedEx views me as a common criminal. Only a fool would believe that such a sign would stop someone from entering a FedEx facility with the intention of robbing it.

I understand that FedEx has every right to ban law abiding citizens from their facilities and it is my hope that all such citizens will stop using your facilities. Because I consider your company’s action a personal affront ot my character and integrity, as well as that of a couple of hundred thousand other Tennesseans, I am closing my FedEx account as soon as I pay the invoice for today’s shipment. I will begin shipping packages at my local UPS store, a place where the owner could care less if a law abiding citizen enters carrying a firearm.

Sincerely,

Mike Butler, REM #7923

So, now what happens if businesses/individuals start notifying FedEx by "criminal trespass" written notice that its delivery trucks and staff are "banned" from their property? Can you imagine the nightmare that would create for FedEx to have to start maintaining a "Banned" property list or risk having its employees charged with criminal trespass.

Certainly, it would require that those who do so make sure we advise any shippers to use UPS, USPS, etc., but that would not stop FedEx from having to maintain some type of database for its delivery staff.

Might not be that hard for them actually. They could simply flag those addresses as automatically undeliverable, and return to sender before even making the trip. Might save them gas.
