The bills, HB 1395 by Joshua Evans and HB 1793 by Ben West, which prevent employers from prohibiting employees from locking their guns in their cars, will be discussed at the House Judiciary Summer Study Committee. This will be on on Tuesday, in the State Capital in Nashville, September 22, 2009 at 9:00 AM at Room HHR 30 LP (this is the room number at Legislative Plaza).
It's very disappointing to see that Speaker Williams has two notorious gun grabbers leading this committee. Kent Williams, who reneged on his pledge to support a restaurant bill and, Janis "Why would you go somewhere dangerous where you would need a gun?" Sontany. It is my understanding that TFA Members, Sam Cooper and Kenny Crenshaw will be testifying to the committee on these bills. Please reply if anyone else is also interested in weighing in on this legislation.
In Liberty,
Pat McGarrity
Director - Shelby County TFA
Kent Coleman, Chair
Jon Lundberg, Vice-Chair
Janis Sontany, Secretary
Members

Wondering if this will affect federal (postal) employees also? Or will the Government still have the power to ban them on those premises?

Good question. I have always seen signs in the post offices that site federal statutes.

Any news or updates on the parking lot bill?
Does anyone know of specific legislators that are working on this bill other than those mentioned that we can coordinate with?
It is time to get some momentum on this bill and let's not forget local - state - and federal government employees as well.
Thanks

There's a new entry since the legislature reconvened:
HB3141 (McDonald)/SB3009 (Jackson) As introduced, prohibits employers from prohibiting persons possessing a handgun carry permit from transporting and storing a firearm out of sight in a locked vehicle on any property set aside for vehicles; prohibits employer from terminating, demoting, or other discriminating against such employee. - Amends TCA Title 39, Chapter 17, Part 13.
No movement so far, though, on this one or its predecessors.

It appeares this is the year to push, I am writing all my contacts in the Legislature to see if the heat could be turned up on this one. If enough folks did that, we might get it off high center!

Where can we get the details of this bill HB3141? Who do we need to send letters too?
This is greatly needed. I work in a terrible part of town and due to the employer I can not carry on to property including the parking lot leaving my commute very dangerous. Thanks

This is a link to the official state status page on . From here you can get the bill's status, sponsor list and hearing dates. You will not get information on who is opposing it and how - that is what is hard and normally what takes a paid lobbyist to acquire efficiently. That is why our opposition is using paid lobbyists.

This bill appears to have been moved to the Summer study session by the Criminal Practice & Procedure Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee.
Lets not forget to correspond with our Legislators after the session is over about this one!

Forget is not a word in my vocabulary with respect to this.
As far as I am concerned, the whole gutless bunch that thinks we should have that protected activity, and lacks the fortitude to stand up for the individual's Constitutional Rights, along with the others that never did think so, should all be summarily canned. I promise to assist all that I can to make that a reality.

C. Richard Archie,
I intend to do my part. I have special dislike of Williams and Sontany both. I think they are both idiots and cant even begin to fathom how they were even elected to begin with.

When they adjourn at the end of the current session, its largely a dead issue. Keep in mind that we vote for all House members in November, several are retiring, several will loose and there will be new committee assignments by January. Summer study committees in even numbered years are a polite way of killing a bill without voting against it.
