Records for Class III weapons

I could be wrong but Io think that it is illegal for a law enforcement agency to maintain records of firearms purchases in thier juridiction. Would this also apply for Class III items?

I am not certain, but I think I remember reading once that NFA records are actually tax records and requires a court order to view them.

I was thinking more along the lines of the CLEO making copies of all of your paperwork when you send in your form 1 or 4 to get a sig.

I have not looked that issue up before but it would not surprise me if they did.
Using a trust eliminates the CLEO signoff and that issue.
