Our guest is Shelly Betts and Don Carman both with or formerly with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Shelly Betts graduated from Belmont University in 1989, and began working at the TBI lab in May, 1990. Betts spent the first 7 years in the Serology/DNA Unit, then moved to the Firearms Unit in 1997. Betts has been a firearms examiner for the past 16 years. Betts is currently the Firearms Unit Supervisor, and Technical Leader for the Nashville and Memphis regional crime labs. As a firearms examiner, Betts examines fired bullets, cartridge cases and other ammunition components to link them to the firearm they were fired in. Betts also performs toolmark examinations, serial number restorations, muzzle-to-target distance determinations, and also is a member of the Violent Crime Response Team.
Don Carman is the Supervisor of the Firearms Unit at the new Metropolitan Nashville Police Department’s Crime Lab. He retired from TBI in 2011 with thirty years service. He began his career in the Drug Identification Unit in 1981, and moved to the Firearms Unit in 1986, where he worked as a firearms examiner for 25 years. Carman received his bachelors degree in Chemistry and Forensic Science from Eastern Kentucky University, and his masters degree in Chemistry from MTSU. Carman began working for Metro in 2011, and has been involved in the design and building of the new crime lab which is slated to open in January, 2014.
Seating is limited to about 100 so arrive early if you want a seat.
Arrive early - 5:00 to 5:30 would be good. Eat in the meeting room if possible and if not, get as close as you can. We will try finishing eating by 7:00 in the meeting room to clear out everything but drinks for the meeting if we have a large turnout.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO PAY AT GOLDEN CORRAL AS YOU COME IN FOR THE MEETING IF YOU ARE EATING. TELL THEM THAT AT THE CASH REGISTER THAT YOU ARE THERE FOR THE MEETING AND TO APPLY THE "GROUP RATE" WHICH INCLUDES YOUR DRINK.
You do not have to be a TFA member to attend nor do you have to be a resident of Nashville. Everyone is welcome and you are encouraged to bring guests.
