The Shelby County TFA is honored to have as our June guest speaker, Shelby County District Attorney General, William L. Gibbons:

District Attorney General Gibbons will give us his views on crime in the Memphis area and discuss the pros and cons of pending crime legislation, specifically SB1967. This bill, sponsored by Senator Paul Stanley, (R-Memphis):
http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/sena ... rs/s31.htm
is intended to prevent soft-on-crime judges from turning violent criminals back out on the street. Obviously, this is something we all support. However, as SB1967 is currently written; because it removes the discretion of judges, could impose a mandatory sentence of several years in prison on citizens who had to legitimately defend themselves for infractions as minor as an expired driver's license. Technically, that would be using a gun during the commission of a crime.
SB1967 is a very, very broad brush with the potential for unintended consequences. There must be a more common sense based solution and we look forward to discussing this with District Attorney General Gibbons and greatly appreciate his being our guest.
Senator Stanley has been invited to speak at our June meeting, but has not returned my e-mail nor phone call to his office, so far.
There will be a drawing for Range USA & TFA T-shirts. We'll promptly adjourn at 8:30 (20:30). I look forward to seeing you there.
