We are pleased to announce our July 17 Tennessee Firearms Association guest, Kirsten Tynan, the executive director of the Fully Informed Jury Association, a 501c3, non-profit, educational organization headquartered in Helena, MT, whose topic will be Jury Protection for the Second Amendment. Ms. Tynan will join us via Skype and will share the history and foundation of a juror’s authority to veto bad laws with a “not guilty” vote, as well as spotlight cases regarding the right to keep and bear arms.

Since the Second Amendment was adopted in 1791, government at all levels has often turned a blind eye to its constitutional importance. Ms. Tynam will present, for the purpose of renewed interest, the Second Amendment in a 21century setting.

Kirsten Tynam has served in various roles from volunteer to national coordinator and currently leads FIJA as executive director. FIJA's mission is to communicate a juror's right and responsibility in serving as an independent judge among the jury pool, which at times means exercising jury nullification - - to conscientiously acquit defendants by voting not guilty when a just verdict requires it, even if it requires setting aside the law. Jury nullification often occurs when jurors disagree with the law in question or disagree with the way in which the law is applied to a particular case. That power is limited by proof of case precedence.

This right of juror nullification dates back centuries. It is firmly grounded in English common law and was enjoyed by colonists before America was founded. The statesmen who later framed our Constitution and Bill of Rights were also protective of a citizen’s right to jury trials and the benefits thereof.
