Former Education Secretary William Bennett said Sunday that schools should consider arming employees in order to prevent mass shootings.
"I'm not sure so -- and I'm sure I'll get nailed for this -- I wouldn't want one person in a school armed, ready for this kind of thing," Bennett said on NBC's "Meet the Press."
"It has to be someone who is trained, it has to be someone who is responsible," he said. "But my God, if you can prevent this kind of thing."
Bennett said that in the latest school shooting in Newtown, Conn., the principal and school psychologist of Sandy Hook Elementary School tried to defend the children against the attacker — but they were unarmed.
"The principal lunged at this guy. The school psychologist lunged at the guy," Bennett said.
Bennett served as the education secretary under President Ronald Reagan, and drug czar under President George H.W. Bush.
