I seem to recall there was a federal law dealing with public access to ranges which received federal monies. Am I totally mistaken on that? If not can somebody point me in the right direction?

Unless Ft. Campbell added a 1000 yard range in the last 10 years, they do not. (For rifle use that is, they do for heavy machine gun and grenade launchers) Last I knew the rifle ranges are 25 meter to 300 meter.
Plus, an additional drawback to utilizing Ft. Campbell ranges is the immense wait time to get a visitors pass. Not to mention the fact that they want a form filled out for every firearm you're bringing on post, and the serial, model and everything imaginable number that is on it. AND....they want to physically see and verify it for themselves.
So, to use military ranges, you have to give them all your personal info, plus your weapon info, plus your vehicle info.
Voluntary gun registration if you ask me.

Ft Campbell has done a lot of range work in the past few years. I dont know for sure but we were shooting 30 MM and 2.75 rockets at a click anda half in 05. That is not to say that they have a 1000 yd rifle range.
As far as guns I have never tried to get one on to Ft Campbell but I know they now sell them in the PX.
