New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" (MAIG) is losing many of its members--mayors who signed up excited, but are departing disenchanted.

Many who signed on to MAIG got more than they bargained for and others were quickly defeated at the polls, succeeded by more gun-friendly counterparts.

For example, when Rockford, IL, Mayor Lawrence Morrissey abandoned MAIG in June, he explained that it was because he had joined the group believing it was going to focus on "enforcement of existing laws." He said he did not realize he was lending his name to a group that was going to push for more gun control and outright gun bans.

When Morrissey made the announcement, his constituents cheered.

Nashua, N.H. Mayor Donnalee Lozeau left MAIG after the group targeted Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) for opposing Senator Joe Manchin's gun control bill. She said she could not be part of group that chose that "course of action instead of cooperatively working with those that have proven over a lifetime of work their true intentions."

According to Buzzfeed.com, MAIG's mayoral membership is down 50 from where it was in February. And while many of these are gone because "they either resigned or lost an election," several "others have specifically asked to be removed" from MAIG's roll.
